Getting the Most from Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy: Simple Tips That Matter

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a powerful medical treatment that supports healing, brain health, inflammation reduction, and cellular recovery. While the therapy itself does the heavy lifting, how you prepare for and care for yourself before, during, and after each session can meaningfully enhance your overall experience and results.

Here’s a practical, patient-friendly guide to help you get the most from every session.

Before Your Session: Prepare Your Body and Mind

What to Wear

Comfort is key. You will change in to loose-fitting, 100% cotton scrubs provided by your center. Avoid wearing any lotions, perfumes, hair products, or makeup unless approved, as these can interfere with safety protocols.

Hydration Matters

Arrive well hydrated. Oxygen delivery works best when your body is adequately hydrated, supporting circulation and cellular oxygen uptake. Aim to drink water consistently throughout the day leading up to your session.

Nutrition: Keep It Light and Balanced

Eat a light, balanced meal 1–2 hours before treatment. Include protein and complex carbohydrates while avoiding heavy, greasy, or overly sugary foods. Stable blood sugar helps prevent lightheadedness and improves comfort during the session.

Mindset Check

HBOT is a passive therapy, but your mindset still matters. Arrive relaxed, open, and unhurried. If it’s your first session, it’s normal to feel curious or slightly anxious—your clinical team will guide you through everything step by step.

Inside the Chamber: Comfort and Communication

Equalizing Pressure

As the chamber pressurizes, you’ll feel pressure changes in your ears, similar to flying or scuba diving. Swallowing, yawning, or gently clearing your ears helps. Always communicate with staff if you need adjustments—comfort and safety come first.

Breathe Normally and Relax

There’s no need to “force” deep breathing. Simply relax and breathe normally. Many patients read, listen to music, meditate, or even nap during treatment.

Speak Up

If you feel discomfort, anxiety, or pressure, let the technician know immediately. Small adjustments can make a big difference.

After Your Session: Support Recovery and Results

Gentle Rehydration

Drink water after your session to support circulation and detoxification.

Light Movement

A short walk or gentle stretching can help your body integrate the treatment and maintain healthy blood flow.

Listen to Your Body

Some patients feel energized; others feel relaxed or slightly tired. Both are normal. Allow your body to respond naturally and avoid over-scheduling immediately afterward, especially early in your treatment series.

Consistency Is Key

HBOT works cumulatively. Attending sessions consistently, following your prescribed protocol, and supporting your body outside the chamber all contribute to optimal outcomes.

If you ever have questions about preparation, comfort, or how you’re feeling during treatment, your HBOT team is there to support you every step of the way.
